Enhancing Solubility and Controlled Release of Mefenamic Acid via Carboxymethyl-β-Cyclodextrin Encapsulation

English Version
CMβCD for Improved Drug Solubility and Controlled Release
Research Background
Many pharmaceutical compounds suffer from poor water solubility, which can limit their effectiveness and require frequent dosing. Mefenamic acid is one example of such a drug.
This study explored the use of carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin (CMβCD) to encapsulate mefenamic acid and improve its pharmaceutical performance.
Research Highlights
Enhancing Solubility and Controlled Release of Mefenamic Acid via Carboxymethyl-β-Cyclodextrin Encapsulation
- Prepared inclusion complexes between mefenamic acid and CMβCD.
- Utilized a solvent evaporation approach for encapsulation.
- Characterized the materials using spectroscopic and microscopic techniques.
- Achieved approximately 71% drug loading efficiency.
- Evaluated release behavior under simulated physiological conditions.
- Observed about 95% cumulative drug release after 48 hours.
- Demonstrated sustained and controlled release characteristics.
Overall Significance
The results highlight the potential of CMβCD as a pharmaceutical carrier for poorly soluble drugs. Such systems may contribute to improved drug formulations, reduced dosing frequency, and better patient outcomes.
