Molecular Design for Advanced OLEDs: Efficiency, Color Purity, and Circularly Polarized Emission
Research Background
High-performance OLEDs must convert electrical excitation into light efficiently and extract that light from the device. Blue OLEDs are especially challenging because their high excitation energies make it difficult to achieve efficiency, color purity, and operational stability at the same time. Future high-resolution and three-dimensional displays also require control over molecular orientation and light polarization.
The studies introduced here address these challenges through three complementary strategies: planarizing molecules to control emission direction, introducing stable helical chirality for circularly polarized light, and incorporating selenium to accelerate excited-state conversion while preserving narrowband emission.
Research Highlights
1. Spatial Planarization Improves Blue-OLED Efficiency and Stability
- Bulky carbazole units confined asymmetric iridium complexes into a more coplanar and anisotropic geometry.
- The planarized structure increased exciton stability and shortened the radiative lifetime.
- Approximately 95% horizontal emitting-dipole orientation improved intrinsic light extraction.
- In a hyper-OLED architecture, alignment was transferred to the terminal emitter, producing 98% horizontal orientation.
- The optimized device delivered 470 nm emission with a 22 nm bandwidth and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 36.9%.
- Its LT50 lifetime reached 446 hours at 1000 cd/m².
2. Helical Platinum Complexes Combine Deep-Blue and Circularly Polarized Light

- A bulky chiral structure suppressed intermolecular interactions and improved rigidity and color purity.
- A representative complex achieved 99% quantum efficiency and a 19.8 nm emission bandwidth.
- OLEDs generated clear, mirror-image circularly polarized electroluminescence.
- Maximum luminance reached 51,592 cd/m², with a peak external quantum efficiency of 33.2%.
- The device maintained 30.9% efficiency at 1000 cd/m².
3. Selenophene Core Fusion Accelerates RISC and Extends Emission Color
- The central benzene unit of an MR-TADF scaffold was replaced by a selenium-containing dibenzoselenophene core.
- Enhanced spin-orbit coupling accelerated reverse intersystem crossing.
- Narrowband emission was retained while the color was tuned stepwise from green to red across 520–600 nm.
- Reverse intersystem crossing rates reached up to 10⁷ s⁻¹.
- The resulting OLEDs achieved external quantum efficiencies above 30%.
- Efficiency roll-off was suppressed and operational lifetime was prolonged.
Potential Applications
These studies show that modern OLED design extends beyond selecting an emission wavelength. Molecular planarity, directional alignment, helicity, and excited-state spin conversion all influence device performance. Horizontal molecular orientation can support brighter, lower-power displays. Direct circularly polarized emission may simplify optical architectures for three-dimensional displays and advanced information technologies. Fast reverse intersystem crossing combined with narrowband long-wavelength emission can contribute to efficient, wide-color-gamut panels.
Further development will require long-term testing under practical panel conditions, scalable material synthesis, and evaluation of stability when multiple emitters are integrated. Coordinated optimization from molecular structure to complete device architecture may enable the next generation of high-resolution, energy-efficient, and multifunctional OLEDs.
