Movable α-Cyclodextrin Rings for Stable Lithium-Metal Batteries

Introduction

Lithium-metal batteries are attractive for high-energy-density storage. Replacing liquid electrolytes with solid polymer electrolytes may improve safety, but ion transport in polymers is commonly coupled to segmental chain motion. This dependence severely limits ionic conductivity at room temperature.

The featured study uses polyrotaxanes containing α-cyclodextrin rings threaded along polymer chains. The rings can move along the chain as slide-ring components, providing a topological strategy for reducing the dependence of lithium-ion migration on polymer relaxation.

Research Highlights

Slide-ring-mediated ion transport in polyrotaxane solid electrolytes for stable lithium metal batteries

  • Polyrotaxane solid electrolytes were prepared with α-cyclodextrin rings threaded along polymer chains.
  • The coverage ratio of the rings was varied to examine the relationship between slide-ring density and ion transport.
  • A 15% coverage ratio was associated with a lower activation energy for lithium-ion migration.
  • The electrolyte exhibited Arrhenius-type transport behavior, consistent with reduced coupling to polymer segmental relaxation.
  • Ionic conductivity reached 4.5 × 10⁻⁴ S/cm at 25°C.
  • The lithium-ion transference number was 0.33.
  • Raman spectroscopy showed that the 15% coverage material had the highest free-ion fraction, 10.20%.
  • X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy identified an increased LiF fraction in the solid-electrolyte interphase.
  • A lithium-metal/lithium-iron-phosphate cell maintained stable cycling for 300 cycles at 0.2 C and 60°C.

Overall Significance and Potential Applications

The study demonstrates that solid-polymer-electrolyte performance can be improved through molecular topology as well as chemical composition. An optimized slide-ring density increased the free-ion population, reduced the migration barrier, and influenced formation of the electrode interphase. The results also show that simply adding more rings is not necessarily beneficial; a balanced coverage ratio is important.

This approach may contribute to solid-state lithium-metal batteries with high energy density and reduced liquid-electrolyte leakage risk. Further development should evaluate long-term cycling at room temperature, stability at higher current densities, uniform large-area manufacturing, and safety at the lithium-metal interface.
