Diarylethenes as Light-Responsive Materials: Tunable Crystal Flexibility and Durable Photoswitching

Introduction

Diarylethenes are photochromic molecules that can reversibly switch between open and closed forms under light. This molecular change can alter color and refractive index, while in crystalline materials it may also modify intermolecular interactions and mechanical behavior.

The two studies introduced here examine a needle crystal whose flexibility changes with light and an all-visible-light photoswitch with near-complete conversion and high durability. One converts molecular photochemistry into a mechanical response, while the other provides stable optical writing and erasing through molecular design.

Research Highlights

1. A Needle Crystal Softened by Ultraviolet Light and Hardened by Visible Light

  • A diarylethene bearing 1-(1R)-1,2-dimethylpropyl amide groups at both molecular ends was investigated.
  • Needle-shaped tetragonal crystals were prepared by sublimation.
  • Irradiating the entire crystal with ultraviolet light made the needle crystal more flexible.
  • Visible-light irradiation returned the crystal to a hard and brittle state.
  • Changing the irradiation wavelength therefore reversibly modulated crystal flexibility.
  • The work connects a molecular photoreaction with a visible change in the mechanical properties of a crystal.
  • Such behavior may support light-responsive components with tunable flexibility.

2. A Highly Durable Photoswitch Operated Entirely by Visible Light

  • An unsymmetrical dithienylethene containing a benzothiazole unit was rationally designed.
  • Violet and orange light switched the molecule in both directions without ultraviolet excitation.
  • Near-quantitative interconversion was achieved between the open and closed states.
  • The closed form had an estimated thermal half-life exceeding 10,000 years, indicating exceptional state retention in the dark.
  • No detectable photofatigue was observed over 100 switching cycles.
  • Ultrafast spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, and quantum-chemical simulations were combined to investigate the origins of the performance.
  • Potential was demonstrated in rewritable holography, anticounterfeiting, and all-optical switching.

Overall Significance

These studies demonstrate that diarylethene photochemistry extends beyond a simple color change. In the crystal study, a light-driven molecular transformation was converted into switching between flexible and brittle mechanical states. In the molecular-design study, efficient and stable switching was achieved using visible light alone.

Light can be delivered without physical contact, focused on selected locations, and separated into different commands by wavelength. These advantages are relevant to micromechanical systems, optical storage, displays, and authentication technologies. Further work should examine resistance to repeated crystal deformation, switching speed and uniformity in devices, long-term operational stability, and scalable processing over larger areas.
