English Version
Diarylethenes for Light-Controlled Molecular Switching and Smart Materials
Research Background
Diarylethenes are representative molecular photoswitches that reversibly open and close a ring under light, changing their color and electronic properties. Because light enables rapid and remote control, these molecules are being explored for rewritable displays, optical memory, sensors, and information-security materials.
Important challenges remain. Many diarylethenes require ultraviolet light for ring closure, while combining photoswitching with emission or controlled three-dimensional assembly can demand complicated molecular synthesis. The studies introduced here address these challenges through radical functionalization, light-directed supramolecular assembly, and modular catalytic synthesis.
Research Highlights
1. Visible-Light Ring Closure through Radical Functionalization
- Two stable TTM radical units were covalently integrated into a diarylethene scaffold.
- Unlike the closed-shell precursor, which required ultraviolet light, the open-shell molecule underwent photocyclization under 450 nm visible light.
- Spectroscopy and theoretical calculations indicated that electronic coupling with the radicals reshaped the absorption profile and introduced visible-light transitions.
- Ring closure was induced by visible light and ring opening by heating, without detectable loss of molecular integrity.
- The different wavelength responses enabled selective photopatterning and optical-encryption demonstrations.
2. Circularly Polarized Light Controls Supramolecular Handedness
- Diarylethene derivatives with alkyl chains of different lengths were synthesized and assembled.
- Right- and left-circularly polarized light preferentially produced opposite one-handed supramolecular helices.
- Helicity arose from π-π stacking of the planar, ring-closed diarylethene cores together with cooperative interactions between alkyl chains.
- Detectable helicity was absent for nonplanar open-ring molecules, closed-ring molecules without alkyl chains, and samples irradiated with linearly polarized light.
- Circular dichroism and microscopy showed how optical handedness can be transferred to a larger molecular assembly.
3. Modular Synthesis of Dual-Functional Dithienylethenes
- A rhodium-catalyzed C-H activation and annulation strategy was developed to prepare heterocyclic-bridged dithienylethenes.
- Tailorable aryl alkynes provided flexible access to a series of related molecular structures.
- The method streamlined conventional synthetic routes and supported faster exploration of functional systems.
- The resulting materials combined tunable photochromism with aggregation-induced emission.
- The approach provides a route to molecular platforms integrating optical switching and fluorescence.
Potential Applications
Together, these studies expand diarylethene function at three levels: the wavelength used for switching, the handed structure formed through assembly, and the synthetic route used to introduce multiple functions. Visible-light operation may reduce reliance on ultraviolet irradiation. Circularly polarized light can encode optical information as supramolecular handedness, while modular synthesis can accelerate the discovery of materials combining color switching and emission.
Potential applications include anti-counterfeiting patterns, wavelength-selective optical memory, polarization-responsive sensors, and rewritable luminescent materials. Further work is needed to evaluate solid-state and thin-film operation, long-term switching fatigue, response speed, and compatibility with scalable manufacturing.
